The Gonzalito saddle from the Stephens brand has proved to be a successful addition to the company’s range of leatherwear, alongside the many polo-specific items stocked and sold to players worldwide by this company, Equine Management.
Equine Management’s Managing Director, Stephen Biddlecombe, said the original product launch four years ago followed intensive research and development. The Gonzalito saddle was co-designed by world-class player Gonzalito Pieres, one of the highest ranked players in the world, and he was pivotal in the design, production and feel of the Stephens saddle, which bears his name.
“I really like the style and design. It sits very well on the horse’s back, doesn’t move and it is very comfortable for both horse and rider. The light weight is a big bonus too,” says Pieres (pictured at the 2020 Cartier Queen’s Cup at Guards Polo Club © imagesofpolo.com), of the eponymous saddle.
The Gonzalito has a classic wooden tree; the gullet of the saddle is more accommodating than most polo saddles. This helps ensure that the rider’s weight is more evenly distributed across the horse’s back. This, twinned with efforts to reduce the weight of the saddle, eliminates excessive equine spinal pressure, is more comfortable for the horse, and improves the player’s position, according to Stephen.
The world’s top ranked female player, Hazel Jackson, who is also an ambassador, plays in a customised version of the Gonzalito saddle, having had saddles shipped to Argentina for her matches there.
