Electrolytes are fluids containing ions that dissolve – they produce negative and positive charges, which help regulate bodily functions. We can provide them naturally via the animal’s diet, but this is not usually in sufficient volumes for harder working horses; hence, electrolytes are usually supplementary. (Sodium, chloride and potassium are the three key important electrolytes for sport horses, and they’re lost predominantly via sweating and also via urination). So, what do these important fluids do? The electrolytes conduct energy, and help send signals to key parts of the equine’s body like the heart, lungs and brain, via the body’s nerve impulses, to function optimally. The cell membranes in the horse’s body regulate the energy flow.
The ion channels in the body’s cells send the electrolytes to the sweat glands – the more hard work the horse does, the more electrolytes are needed, to regulate body systems. (Compound feeds and forage do contain electrolytes, but will usually not replace what a horse in anything upwards of light work uses up each day. Salt licks are a good choice for all equines, although will not be sufficient for horses in hard work.)
Electrolytes from coconuts
Very few equines outside of racing are currently being maintained at peak fitness because of the ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic, however once we are back into normal training regimes, and the weather becomes warmer (meaning equines will sweat more and lose fluids), those equines in hard work will benefit from supplementary electrolytes. We have a great new product available that’s designed to support hard working horses.
COCO LYTES, pictured above, is based on dehydrated coconut water sourced from young, green coconuts; we have harnessed the five key electrolytes found naturally in the fruit: sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. The natural ratio of electrolytes, carbohydrates, and protein found in coconuts (actually a sub-type of fruit called a drupe, containing a seed), means they’re a great source of natural energy. In particular, coconut water is packed with potassium, which enhances rehydration through replacement of intracellular water.
Peak condition
COCO LYTES™ also contains natural B vitamins Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), pantothenic acid, folic acid, and biotin, as well as trace amounts of thiamin (B1) and Vitamin C. Its source, coconut water, also contains some enzymes and amino acids, and is very low in sugar. With this unique formula of specific minerals and vitamins, manufacturer Equine Management believes COCO LYTES™ offers the best method for supporting and maintaining your hard-working horse in peak condition. Available in 3kg (RRP £23.60) & 10kg (RRP £60) sizes. VAT exempt. TRADE ORDERS – CLICK HERE FOR INFO.
